Rooibos Tea & My Opa

The Tea of the Day is Vanilla Cupcake Rooibos. Rooibos tea is a variety all its own with a deep red color and an amazing sweet, deep earthy flavor. The tea leaves come from a shrub called Aspalathus linearis which is grown in South Africa. Rooibos is an herbal tea and caffeine-free. South Africans have been drinking it for over 300 years. This tea is packed with antioxidants and low in tannins. Tannins are what can give tea a bitter taste. Rooibos tea is delicious, very enjoyable and can whisk you off to far away places.

When I held my first cup of rooibos tea I sensed something familiar. I inhaled the aroma, shut my eyes and thought, “What is this scent? It reminds me of something!” Another inhale, shutting my eyes, leaning into the cup, “What is this scent?” After three or four rounds of the ritual, my eyes opened wide and I thought, “Aha! I know what it is”, and my mouth began to form an affectionate smile. I was instantly transported into my grandparents living room. I saw my Opa Fred, sitting in his chair, wearing his Tyrolean hat. I could see the smile in his cheerful eyes. My Opa Fred’s smile was the best, it was inviting, and although I don’t remember very many conversations, I remember his accent, love and chuckle. Awe!, being brought back to that memory is comforting. My Opa was an artist. He immigrated from Germany and was a professional and successful painter. He painted murals across America, (some of them still decorating the walls of German restaurants today), and played folk music with a band of friends. The scent of rooibos tea reminds me of my Opa! Marvelous memories, flowing out of a thankful heart. Reflections of the creative legacy he left our family. My Oma was a creative also.

What is your family legacy? What are your family strengths? Whatever they are, they are a gift! You were designed specifically to carry them to humanity. They are part of the thumbprint you will leave on the earth. They are your unique expression. Your gifts and talents are waiting to come out. They are ready to take off and influence others. Can you see yourself encouraging others with your unique talents? Did you know you are the only you and nobody else on this planet has your unique way of influencing the world? Did you know that? It is true! Only you can release what you have to give, and it is unique and special. The world needs your influence, the world needs your voice, the world needs you. Why? Because God created you to be a creative influencer to share His creative heart and expression of love. He chose your family legacy to drop you into so you would have the DNA of your families, special unique talents. Trust me they are in you and if you don’t recognize them, ask God how He created you to influence the world. He will tell you.

To cultivate our gifts, we need to be intentional and sometimes we need to visit the past. I think of what brought me the most joy as a child. Where in life did I feel like my life fit best. It seems throughout the years I have moved farther and farther outside my unique true self. My gifts stifled, my voice silent, and in finding my voice again, there have been bumps along the way. Bumps of being misunderstood, bumps of saying the wrong thing, bumps of sharp comments or a harsh tone of voice, bumps of the pains and hurts that silenced my talents. Bumps, Bumps, Bumps, we all have traveled over them. The bumps along the way have caused me to look at why they were there, and looking at the why brought me to the who, the what and the what ifs. Deep thoughts over my little cup of tea. Reflections taking me deeper into redefining what my best life is meant to be.

Today, I hope you can sit for a moment and think about what brings you joy and a sense of fulfillment. It’s never too late to start taking a piano class, or a painting class or a singing class. It’s never too late to reach your dreams and make the most out of each day.

Every inspired thought, every desire discovered will bring you closer to your passion and creative influence. Find it and let’s set a plan, for our follow through, let’s set an intention. I am right there with you!  Accompanied by a well steeped cup of tea.
